As we all know, I love to read. Here is a list of some of the books I am reading now and some of the books I quote in my homilies. Please enjoy...

Books I am reading:

A very interesting, intriguing novel involving an “Artificial Friend”. AI, robotics and what makes us human.
A fascinating, complex read connecting various historic times and places. The common thread a Greek myth.
A yacht explodes with survivors in a life boat, one of them being “the Lord”. A reflection on belief and doubt.
The collapse of his marriage and career as a Chicago police officer, he moves to an Irish village. And secrets begin to surface.
A young woman traveling to China to get in touch with her heritage. A very good read. True story.
His 3rd book on this Jesuit priest’s work with former gang members in LA; anecdotal, funny and so hopeful.
A novel on the writer, Thomas Mann; of “Death in Venice” fame. The novel covers a tortured, yet brilliant life; through WWI and into the Third Reich. This could easily become a PBS miniseries. It has it all. I enjoyed it.
The writer of “A Gentleman in Moscow”. This book is high on my list. A great novel. A page turner.
This is a true account of the AIDS crisis when it first broke; to ruinous effect resulting in the deaths of so many young men. This book is poignant and moving, involving some amazing religious women who felt called to minister to those who, at the time, were being ostracized and rejected. Because of these nuns, I read this account feeling quite proud of their witness. Leave it to women! Were they not the first to discover the tomb empty? O’Loughlin’s book a resurrection story.
On the life and legacy of John Lewis. A wonderfully courageous man who gave his life to the work of civil rights; from its inception and within the Black community. A truly great read, and a hero of mine.
It takes place Sri Lanka involving a mysterious death, endless civil war, all within the complex pull of human love. As the jacket puts it: “The unattainable distances of who we are and what we seek. A decent novel.
I quoted the novel in a recent homily. This ‘library’ a kind of limbo between life and death. An odyssey by which the main character learns to want the life given her, whereas before she wanted only to die. I really enjoyed this novel and plan to read more by the author.
I loved this novel situated in rural Ireland. The writing is exquisite, poetic and lyrical; reminiscent of the NW writer Brian Doyle. Irish and Catholic through and through with faith and doubt, relationship and forgiveness, weather, song and unrequited love wonderfully woven together. I read his earlier novel “History of Rain” and loved it. Williams is one of my favorite novelists.
With PNW topography surrounding the story: from Wenatchee to Okanagon. I find orchardist, William Talmadge a Christ figure. Compassionate, tragic; revealing the importance of relationship. My second time reading it. A great read; Coplin a wonderful writer.
Story and murder mystery that takes place in Minnesota. It kept my attention. Riveting. A ‘search and rescue whodunit’ kind of novel. The telling a bit muddied toward the end; but well worth it.
Given to me last Christmas by a friend. About a horse and other animals who talk. So much wiser than humans, sometimes. A great fantasy read. A kind of “paradise regained”; there in the City of Light. I really enjoyed it.
A very sobering read on climate change and the loss of biodiversity as we teeter toward a 6th mass extinction in earth’s history if steps are not taken soon. Yet, he offers hope by pointing to some amazing examples of human ingenuity. A must-read and one I could not put down. Attenborough is impressive.
A great biography on the biblical scholar and writer, Eugene Peterson. I consider him a mentor.
A novel about an Indian Residential School in Minnesota, injustices and an escape down the river; like Tom Sawyer. Very good
A Pakistani UK citizen, victim of racial abuse and her courageous step. Very timely. Her pilgrimage along the “backbone” of Britain. Good.
A 542 page tome on Christianity: “How it remade the World”. It’s well-written, though he skims over a lot of history to make his point.
